CUMC researchers devise new program for classifying periodontal disease Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center have got devised a new program for classifying periodontal disease based on the genetic signature of affected cells, than on clinical signs and symptoms rather. The new classification system, the first of its kind, may enable earlier detection and even more individualized treatment of serious periodontitis, before lack of teeth and supportive bone occurs. The findings were published in the web edition of the Journal of Oral Research recently. Presently, periodontal disease is categorized as either chronic or aggressive, based on clinical signs or symptoms, such as intensity of gum swelling and level of bone loss.
